SAFER tyres are becoming the norm on Jersey’s roads, with spot-checks of more than 600 tyres in October – including at the Jersey Rally – showing a marked improvement on the previous year.
According to a newly published report by the Infrastructure Department, the Tyre Safety Month campaign saw 604 tyres analysed at the Royal Jersey Showground during the Rally, and at Les Jardins, Patriotic Street and Jersey Airport car parks.
Of those inspected, 553 (91.6%) were classed as “fine”, up from 83.6% in 2024. The proportion of tyres in poor condition fell from 7.9% to 4.1%, while borderline poor tyres reduced from 8.6% to 4.3%.
Overall, 51 tyres (8.4%) had issues – with 25 requiring “immediate replacement” and 26 indicating that replacement “will be needed in the near future”.
Jersey’s Collision and Casualty Reduction Plan includes a Safety Performance Indicator aiming for “100% of tyres to exceed the legal tread depth of 1.6 mm by 2027”. The report notes that 99.7% of tyres met the legal limit in 2025, compared with 97.6% the previous year.
Following the event, owners of vehicles with illegal tyres were contacted by DVS to ensure “immediate replacements” were arranged.
