MORE than a dozen animals have been seized from a Jersey equestrian centre and placed into private care across the Island due to concerns about their safety – prompting the launch of a £20,000 fundraiser to support their ongoing needs.

The States Vet, working with the Viscounts, took the animals – including 12 horses, three goats, chickens, ducks and guinea from Five Oaks-based Happy Hooves on Friday morning to ensure their welfare.

The animals have since been placed in the care of private individuals, where they will be closely monitored and looked after.

It comes after several customers were contacted by Happy Hooves on Thursday evening, informing them that they would be ceasing trading and that the horses were due to be seized.

A message seen by the JEP described the situation as “heartbreaking”, and explained that it was the result of a Petty Debts judgment.

“Dear amazing and loyal customers… We are having to stop trading with immediate effect as due to owing £2k after a bad winter, that I can’t pay before tomorrow, the horses are all being seized.”

JEP understands that customers were informed they would be directed to who they need to contact for refunds in due course.

Police officers, a mediator from debt recovery agency Skyfall, and members of agricultural service David Dumosch Ltd were also present to assist with the intervention on Friday.

A spokesperson for David Dumosch Ltd explained that the agency was working to provide food for the various animals, alongside help with veterinary and husbandry matters where needed.

The horses are undergoing professional management with regular farrier care, while the smaller animals have been housed in appropriate settings and monitored through routine health checks.

Jonathan Whitehead, managing director of David Dumosch Ltd, said: “When we became aware of this situation, our immediate priority was to ensure the animals were cared for appropriately. This has required the cooperation of many people, and I would like to personally thank every single person who was there on the day to help and assist.

“I would also like to thank everyone who has offered land, stables, and additional assistance. It is truly heart-warming to see such a fantastic and supportive community come together.”

When the animals are deemed fit and well, David Dumosch Ltd will seek appropriate places to rehome the animals.

To support the continued care of the seized animals in the interim, the business has launched a JustGiving page to raise “essential funds” to aid the ongoing nurturing and maintenance of the animals.

Their goal is to raise £20,000.
