DURRELL has announced its new curator of herpetology and invertebrates following the departure of a staff member who worked at the zoo for almost a quarter of a century.
Ciaran Westgate has been promoted to replace Matt Goetz, who has left the Island for his native Germany after working for the conservation trust since 2002.
Mr Westgate first joined Durrell in 2021 as a senior keeper after working at Tilgate Zoo and SeaLife Brighton. He was later promoted to a team leader before becoming deputy curator of herpetology and invertebrates.
The wildlife trust said he has worked closely with Mr Goetz for the past five years and is actively involved with several conservation programmes.
Mr Westgate is also the vice chair of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA)’s Reptile and Amphibian Working Group, and co-ordinates the European Breeding Programme for the emerald tree monitor lizard.
Mr Westgate said he was “truly honoured” to take on this “important and exciting” role.
“As a herpetologist and an all-round planet earth lover, the role really encompasses everything I am passionate about,” he added.
“Durrell’s stories and vision are very close to my heart, and I am looking forward continuing the inspirational work of my predecessors, to deliver true impact, both here in Jersey and around the world.”
