A YOUNG Islander’s determination to help other children in need has been brought to life in a festive picture book raising money for a local food charity.

Published by charity Caring Cooks of Jersey, ‘Ophelia’s Big Idea’ was written by local author Sophie Jane Young and illustrated by Palak Rani.

The book is based on the true story of seven-year-old Ophelia Goldsborough, who has made a name for herself after organising several fundraisers for Caring Cooks, including two Christmas markets selling pre-loved children’s books, toys and clothes.

At the return of her second ‘Jingle Mingle Market’ last month, the Jersey College Prep Year 3 pupil managed to raise £1,250 for Caring Cooks’ ‘Winter Food or Fuel’ campaign, which provides families with vouchers for essential items in the cold months.

Earlier in the year, in April, the youngster also raised money for the charity by hosting a Lego competition, and in 2024 she donated all of her birthday money.

A spokesperson for Caring Cooks said the new picture book aims to celebrate kindness, community and the power of giving and described it as “a powerful reminder that one person can make a difference, no matter how young”.

Ophelia’s Big Idea costs £10 and is available to order at the following link on the Caring Cooks website: caringcooksofjersey.com/ophelias-big-idea.

All proceeds from all sales of the book will go towards the charity’s work providing for and educating Islanders about affordable and healthy food.
