PENSIONS will increase by nearly 2% more than RPI from next month.
Jersey pensioners will receive a 4.7% increase in the old age pension from the beginning of October, with someone receiving a full-rate pension getting just over £14 more a week to a new figure of £312.48,
On an annual basis, the increase is £734 and will bring the full pension to £16,294 per year.
Social Security Minister Elaine Millar said: “Our pensioners have contributed to Jersey throughout their working lives and it is important that the Old Age Pension continues to provide a strong foundation for old age.”
The increase has been determined by Jersey’s RPI in June – which this year was 2.8%.
Senator Millar added: “This year’s increase will put more than £14 a week (or over £700 per year) into the pocket of someone receiving a full pension.”
She also encouraged anyone who thinks they might be eligible for income support to check their entitlement.
Islanders whose combined tax contribution with their partner is less than £1,000 and their capital assets are less than £64,000, are at pension age and have a pension may be entitled to the Pension Plus Scheme.
The scheme helps with the cost of dental, optical and chiropody care. It also automatically qualifies people for for the Health Access Scheme, which provides reduced fees for GP and nurse appointments, around £10 and £7 respectively.
Pensioners who do not pay income tax are eligible for the Cold Weather Bonus, which is a two-part payment that varies in relation to the temperature during winter.
Other support for lower-income pensioners includes a one-off payment at Christmas and free TV licenses for those aged 75 and over.
