THE future of the fruit, veg and food section of Rondels Farm Shop in Trinity is uncertain, after the managing director announced it could close at the end of November unless a new business steps in to take over.
Founded in 2008, the farm shop began by selling Jersey Royals and winter crops grown on the site, later expanding to offer produce from other local suppliers, as well as imported goods from the UK and France. Over time, it developed into a small retail hub, home to a café, butcher and other businesses.
However, several recent challenges have taken their toll.
Managing director John Rondel said: “Our business has been impacted by Brexit, which made importing goods from France unviable.
“Add to that the retirement of our butcher, the Coop opening just up the road and the disruption expected from upcoming roadworks on St John’s Main Road – it feels like the right time for me to retire too.”
Mr Rondel emphasised that the site remains a strong location for local retail and food producers.
“It’s still a fantastic spot and we are hoping to work with Genuine Jersey to try to find someone to take it on,” he said.
The farm shop’s produce section will close at the end of November unless a new vendor or group of vendors comes forward. However, other businesses on the site will continue trading as normal.
The announcement comes at a time when local food production is seeing a resurgence, thanks in part to the Rural Support Scheme, which has helped increase the number of smallholders in Jersey from zero to over 80 in recent years.
Mr Rondel expressed hope that some of these newer producers might be interested in continuing the shop’s legacy by bringing fresh, local food to the community.
