JERSEY will be able to reuse more of its building waste after the Island’s leading aggregate recycling company invested close to £400,000 in a concrete-making ‘drive-thru’.

AAL Recycling has built a state-of-the-art concrete batching plant at its site at La Collette. It will be able to mix in different grades of aggregate – including recycled sand, grit and chippings – at the touch of a button.

After the quantity and type of concrete is inputted, the machine prints out a OR code which is then scanned to start the process.

Although capable of being fully automated, the plant will be manned by AAL Recycling staff for health and safety reasons.

It is also directly plugged into to the firm’s invoicing system.

The batch plant creates non-structural concrete, so is suitable for, for example, blinding, floor screed and no-fines concrete.

It was officially opened recently by Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan.

AAL Recycling owner Alan Langlois said that the German-made concrete batcher was the latest investment in the firm’s £7.5m facility at La Collette.

The plant, which will be managed by Andy ‘Goddy’ Godwin, has made more than 1,800 tonnes of concrete since it began operating on 1 August.
