AFTER around 1,800 days, the Jersey Opera House is preparing to reopen its doors to the general public for the first time tomorrow night.

Following a government grant of £12.7 million, the historic theatre has undergone a major refurbishment since it closed at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, and is set to embark on a full programme of performance from local and overseas artists.

Islanders will witness a change in the theatre’s colour scheme and seating, but the iconic chandelier remains.

The refurbished theatre also has a new plant room and a new heating system and the venue also features two dance studios, as well as space for bars and a restaurant.

Audiences will be welcomed tomorrow for the first of a three-night run of the appropriately titled ‘Encore! Welcome Home’, which will see cast of homegrown talent return to the theatre’s main stage, some who have spent time in the West End.

Although much of the work has been done to bring the venue to modern standards, the Opera House is in the process of raising extra cash to upgrade its technical facilities, such as stage lighting and sound equipment.

Ahead of its official opening, Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel said it is “really exciting” to see the theatre ready to reopen, describing it “as the heart of the Island’s cultural life”.

“The arts are an important part of our community, and I am pleased with the progress that is being made under the new leadership at Jersey Opera House Limited,” Deputy Morel said.

The reopening of the Opera House, which operates as a charity, also coincides with the venue’s 125th anniversary year.

Laura Robertson interim chair of the theatre board added that the upcoming autumn and winter schedule “offers something for everyone”.

“We are thrilled that Islanders are keen to return to the newly refurbished Opera House, and we look forward to welcoming them through our doors,” she said.
