PORTS of Jersey is working towards the next stage of plans to stabilise Gorey Pier that will involve the removal of the landing stage.

In a recent update sent to harbour users, public service obligations manager Ande Vibert said that a planning application would shortly be submitted for the removal of the upper deck and support pillars.

It will also seek the installation of temporary support bracing from the lower deck to the original pier structure.

“These works are expected to be carried out from the seaward side, minimising disruption to pier-side activities,” Mr Vibert explained.

“However, please note that the pier head (from the security gate) will need to be closed during demolition.”

Subject to planning approval, the works could begin in March or April and be completed before the start of the next summer season.

“We’re also working on plans to ensure the area remains safe for vessels and navigation once the upper deck is removed,” Mr Vibert added.

Safety concerns over the pier’s landing stage were raised by Royal Engineers in 2022.

It was closed the following year in the wake of extensive inspections, surveys and tests, with Ports of Jersey citing “significant” structural deterioration.

This summer saw ground investigations carried out along the pier arm and head to assess its structural stability.

“These findings are now being analysed by Hartigan Structural Engineers, and early results suggest that targeted maintenance and upgrades will be beneficial over the coming years,” Mr Vibert said.

“This new data, alongside previous and ongoing non-intrusive surveys, is helping us determine the most suitable methods to address the pier’s deterioration.
