A FAMILY visiting from Somerset are leaving a lasting impression on Jersey by sketching some of its best-known landmarks on pebbles.

Dan Pearce and his 13-year-old son Evan both love sketching and while Dan mostly uses his pad to create memories, Evan has taken a more unusual approach on their first family holiday to the Island: using pebbles found on local beaches as a canvas to create memories.

Evan is placing his stones on a Jersey map to mark out where the family have visited on their week-long holiday; however, he does not plan to take them home when they leave on Friday.

Instead, the Pearces would like to donate the two dozen or so pebbles to a school, charity or anyone else who could make a home for them.

Dan said: “We started sketching a couple of years ago and both carry around sketchbooks: perhaps, if we have a few minutes outside a museum, pub or café, we’ll quickly sketch what we see.

“Not only is it enjoyable but it also helps you to notice details that are so easily overlooked.”

The family are visiting as many beaches, churches, museums, fortifications and other attractions as they can on their Jersey break.

Evan, along with his mum Kelly, are keen bellringers in Crewkerne and they have brought their passion for campanology to the Island, ringing the bells at St Mark’s Church and also for a wedding on Saturday at St John’s Parish Church.

Dan said: “We have had an amazing time in Jersey and our sketches are just a way of passing on the love. We’ve done three of the four corners of Jersey so far with just St Catherine’s to go.

“The beaches are lovely; we love the people, and the bus network is fantastic. There is so much history crammed into every square kilometre; it really is a very special place. The only negative thing I would say is that a lot of display boards at various bays and attractions are looking very tired and are often difficult to read.”
