The wife of a cancer patient currently undergoing treatment has completed an inter-island row to raise funds for charity.
Last month, Anne Thomson, aged 66, completed a solo row from Sark to Jersey, raising over £1,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey.
Her husband, Peter Thomson, is a service user of the charity after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer 5 years ago.
Mrs Thomson said: “My story is not unusual, as there are many of us whose lives are touched and affected by cancer, like my husband, Peter.”
She described the charity’s work as “invaluable,” saying they do “a wonderful job of supporting Islanders on their cancer journey.”
Despite only signing up for the race in April, Mrs Thomson completed the 27km row, overcoming tough conditions, including 30-degree heat and challenging tides.
She said: “I felt that as he (Peter) was taking on his own personal challenge, I should take on a challenge of my own – one that would put me out of my comfort zone, but also to do something that would benefit others.”
Mrs Thomson became the oldest lady to have rowed solo in a single boat during the annual race and was awarded the ‘Merit Cup.’
She said that throughout the race, “the thought of my husband going through his treatment kept me positive.”
Andrew Gardham, community and engagement lead for Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey, said: “Individual fundraisers like Anne really do make a huge difference.”
“By giving up her time so generously, she’s helped us continue to offer free cancer support services to anyone affected by cancer in Jersey. Her efforts aren’t just appreciated — they’re vital to the work we do,” he continued.
Mr Gardham shared their appreciation for Mrs Thomson’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the charity.
He said: “Not only did Anne raise much-needed funds, but she also raised awareness by bravely sharing her own story. Her husband Peter is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, and in his honour, she completed an incredible challenge — rowing solo from Sark to Jersey, a tough 27km across open sea with strong tides and currents.”
“Her strength and determination are truly inspiring, and we’re so grateful for everything she’s done for Macmillan Jersey.”
