YOUNG dancers from Jersey were among 8,500 competitors from 51 countries who took part in the the Dance World Cup finals last week in Spain.

The 78 islanders were among 8,500 competitors from 51 countries who took to the stage in Burgos from Thursday 3 to Saturday 12 July.

Jersey’s squad ranged in age from six to 18 years old, with dancers from five of the island’s dance schools taking part.

Channel Island qualifiers took place in February, with the highest scoring dances selected to travel to the finals in Spain.

The Jersey team performed 92 solos, 21 duet and trios, and 14 group dances across all genres – including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, acro, contemporary and more.

During the finals, dances which placed sixth in the world or higher were announced on stage.

From Jersey, Aria Elliott placed fifth for her lyrical solo and Carla Kovacs placed sixth for her acro solo.

Jersey’s junior small acro group ‘EFX’ from JM Dance Studios also placed fifth in the world.

In the junior/senior section, the highest scoring solo from Jersey was performed by Bayley Lily King, the highest scoring duet/trio was ‘Stereotypes’, and the highest scoring group was ‘Megamix’ – all from JM Dance Studios.

In the children’s section, the highest scoring solo from Jersey was performed by
Maggie Harris from Jersey Academy of Dancing, the highest scoring duet/trio was ‘Stardust’ from JM Studios, and the highest scoring group was ‘Big Noise’ from JM Dance Studios.

The highest scoring solo, duet/trio, and group in the mini section were all from Étoile Studios.

Team Manager Lisa Hobbs said: “What an achievement for everyone who performed at the DWC finals dancing their hearts out representing Jersey.

“Team Jersey, you made us all proud. A small island with an abundance of talent.

“Now for some rest and enjoy your summer holidays.”
