Val de la Mare online map

TREES in Val de la Mare’s arboretum have been mapped in a new online database.

Charity Jersey Trees for Life said the new database would enable users to find out information about every tree, living or dead, including when they were planted and their names.

There was “considerable damage” caused to the collections in the arboretum when Storm Ciarán struck the Island in November 2023.

The charity also hopes the data will help with conservation work.

The map was made possible due to a grant from the Jersey Community Foundation and funds from the Channel Islands Lottery – it is the second online map the charity have launched after one was made of Adelina Wood in St Helier. The charity hopes to create maps for its other woodlands, including the Alder Collection in St Brelade.

Katherine Dunn, a local Island Biodiversity master’s degree graduate, spent last summer auditing trees to gather data for the online tool.

Jersey Trees for Life chief executive Alex Morel said she was “delighted” the public could now freely access information about the “remarkable trees” at Val de la Mare.

She said. “People can now learn our trees’ names, where they’re from and when they were planted, all by using their mobile phones.

“A lot of people and organisations have come together to make this happen.”

Ms Morel added that the next stage for the collections was to create botanical labels for each tree so visitors can recognise different species.

Jersey Community Foundation chief executive Anna Terry said: “Knowing the emphasis placed on education by Jersey Trees for Life, and of course appreciating the arboretum’s popularity, we see this as an important environmental project that we’re proud to support.”

The online map of Val de la Mare Arboretum can be found on the charity’s website.
