PORTS of Jersey has applied for permission to drill holes and dig pits on Gorey Pier.
The organisation wants to carry out “intrusive investigations” to uncover the extent of the damage at the pier to determine what work is needed to stabilise it.
In October 2023, the small, attached landing stage at the pier had to be closed to the public after structural deterioration was found.
Further damage was done during Storm Ciarán, when winds of up to 100mph lashed the Channel Islands.
A UK firm, Terra Firma, has been chosen as the contractors for the work, which will include drilling boreholes and creating trial pits along the pier. The cost will not be clear until the investigations are complete.
Government permission is needed for the work as the pier is a Grade I listed structure. According to the government’s website, such buildings or places are “of exceptional public and heritage interest to Jersey and of more than Islandwide importance, being outstanding examples of a particular historical period, architectural style, building type or archaeological site”.
