THE States police are investigating a hoax email threat sent to schools last week.
Two Island schools were evacuated as a result of the threat, which was subsequently confirmed to be “non-credible” by the police, with one – St George’s Prep – remaining closed for the remainder of the day last Friday.
A police spokesperson said: “St George’s was the first school to call this in – it was swiftly established that this was a hoax, and further schools then called in informing us the same blanket email had been received.”
An investigation into the issue was under way, the spokesperson added.
In a statement, the Education Department said: “It is unfortunate when incidents occur that disrupt teaching within schools.
“However, well-considered plans are in place for such scenarios and these were followed by the impacted schools.
“The priority will always be to protect children, and the head teachers acted swiftly and appropriately to do this before the email was confirmed as non-credible by the States of Jersey Police.”
St George’s head teacher Sarah Hague sent an email to parents in which she thanked the police and her school’s staff for their response to the incident.
St Peter’s was the other school where an evacuation took place, but the school reopened later in the day.
