PART of Rouge Bouillon which has been closed for over a month due to damage caused by a sink-hole will only reopen once affected buildings “are stabilised and all risks of structural collapse have been mitigated”, according to the government.
The Infrastructure and Environment Department said “detailed investigations” and repair work were being carried out, admitting that these were “expected to take some time”. The department said it recognised that the closure had “significant impacts on daily travel and local businesses”, but explained that the situation was necessary to “ensure the safety of all Islanders”.
The sink-hole, which was caused by a burst water main underneath Rouge Bouillon, appeared by the entrance to College Gardens on 18 December. A section of the road between Clarendon Road and Palmyra Road remains closed.
“The situation is highly complex with several adjacent walls and buildings that are unsafe and severely cracked,” the government said in its update.
The public are being advised to continue avoiding the area and to use alternative routes.
The Infrastructure and Environment Department has said that changing current traffic arrangements could pose safety risks, create confusion and cause congestion.
“Your patience and co-operation are appreciated as we work to resolve this matter and ensure the safety of all Islanders,” the government said.
A further update will be issued this week.
