ISLANDERS are being warned to only travel if necessary and keep away from coastal areas this weekend with Storm Darragh expected to hit the Island bringing gusts up to 75mph.

Jersey’s emergency planning team is monitoring the storm’s approach.

Loose property should also be secured, the government has warned, as the Island braces for Force Eight winds, with severe gale-force gusts, blustery showers and hail.

Jersey Met has forecast that winds will notably increase on Friday evening and throughout Saturday, most likely being at their strongest during Saturday afternoon.

The Severe Weather Tactical Co-ordination Group (SW TCG) met on Thursday to assess the situation.

It is also expected that there will be an increased risk of falling trees and debris on the roads.

To report routes blocked by fallen trees, Islanders should contact Infrastructure and Environment operations and transport on 445 509 for main routes, and the duty Centenier for parish roads.

Storm Darragh is the fourth named storm that has hit the British Isles this season.
