A LARGE oil spill has caused major problems on several roads in St Helier.

Dozens of drivers reported dangerous road conditions in and around the Springfield area and along Queen’s Road on Thursday evening, with several saying they saw accidents or had a near-miss.

At the same time, the States police said they were ‘aware of a spillage of oil/fuel on La Motte Street along St Saviour’s Road, Stopford Road and surrounding areas, including Queen’s Road heading northbound’.

Motorists were urged to report areas of concern by phoning the Infrastructure Department on 725351.

It followed a separate warning on Thursday morning of a ‘large oil spill’ on Grande Route de St Jean.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said that all the major roads in the parish had been effected but added that they were now clear.

Dozens of drivers took to Facebook to describe the chaos.

One wrote: ‘I nearly crashed with my kiddies in the car. We came up Grande Route de Saint-Jean coming from round past Springfield in town and I thought we weren’t going to be able to stop. I was mentally working out where was safest to crash.’

Another Islander wrote: ‘I passed a crash at the junction after Grand Marché where the road splits which looked like someone went into the back of someone else. This oil may have caused that as I thought my brakes were playing up due to the rain.’

A van driver said that ‘St Saviour’s Road, from Castle Cars to Stopford Road split by front of Grand Marché stinks of diesel and is lethal’

The driver added: ‘Van was sliding four-wheel-drift all over at low speed! Hope fellow bikers don’t go that way! No chance on a motorcycle.’

And a St Helier resident said: ‘Two accidents outside my house in Stopford Road this afternoon . Hoping a fast driver doesn’t come through my bay window later this evening – they tear around here.’
