No action prompts camper demo plan

Paul Hymas says he is considering organising a protest three years after the States voted in favour of a trial scheme

A PROTEST ahead of the general election against the lack of action taken since the States voted to trial new campervan sites three years ago is being considered by a campaign group.

In May 2019, Members backed Senator Steve Pallett’s proposition calling for new areas to be tried out under a regulated system, following a clampdown on motorhomes at the Le Port site in St Ouen’s Bay.

But with the third anniversary of the vote just months away, any sort of trial scheme is yet to be announced.

Paul Hymas, a spokesman for the Love Le Port campaign group, said he would organise a protest unless there was a development before the spring.

‘I’m going to start floating the idea of having a peaceful protest in the month of May. This would coincide with three years since the vote in the States and would be only weeks before the general election,’ he said.

He added that he had recently written to States Members after being frustrated at the lack of action taken on the issue.

‘Every time I ever speak to anyone in the government about this they always say that there is going to be a pilot scheme and it is going to happen soon. But then nothing ever happens,’ he said. ‘I recently emailed all the States Members who voted in favour of Senator Pallett’s proposition to remind them that it is now three years since the vote and nothing had happened to take forward a decision of the States Assembly in that time.’
