FOR years, a trio of Islanders have been brightening Islanders’ Christmases with a decorative display.

In fact, the array of festive lights at Grands Vaux has become something of a tradition, with many people popping round just to have a look at the impressive illuminations.

Jean-Michel Hamon and Derek and Pam Cauvain have decorated their homes at Whiteley Close in a variety of Christmas decorations in support of Jersey Cancer Relief for several years.

Mr Hamon said they had started raising money for the charity after it paid for him to accompany a patient – one of his girlfriend’s family members – to Southampton.

He said: ‘They paid for everything, so when I came back I said we are going to start doing it for [Jersey] Cancer Relief from now on and we have been doing so ever since.’

He explained that most of the lights were low-voltage, having used only about £70-worth of electricity since the start of the month.

‘We always keep an eye on the meter, just to see how much we are burning. It normally takes me a month to do [the lights] – weather permitting – but this year it has only taken me around 2½ weeks.

‘We have raised not far off £7,000 over the years – not including this year,’ he said, adding that Islanders should stop and take a look if they happened to drive past the house.

Mr Hamon can also be seen riding a fold-up bicycle which has been covered with Christmas lights.

Jersey Cancer Relief administrator Kerry Moisan said the awareness raised for the charity by the eye-catching display was ‘absolutely priceless’.

She said: ‘We are very appreciative – every time people see that it locks the logo and the words Jersey Cancer Relief into their minds.

‘For us, donations are lovely but what is just as important is raising awareness and he is doing a fabulous job. He is as bright and as lively as the house is.’
