JERSEY Hospice Care has opened registration for its annual Christmas tree collection and recycling service, which raises funds for the charity.

In return for a minimum donation of £10, a team of 40 volunteers will pick up trees from outside registered people’s homes in January and deliver them to the green waste team at La Collette for conversion to soil improver for local farms and gardens.

The scheme was first launched in 2005 and has proved a successful annual fundraiser for Jersey Hospice since.

Scott Douglas, the charity’s events officer, said: ‘Christmas tree collections is always a fantastic fundraising event to start the year.

‘It’s a hassle-free way for people to make sure their tree is properly recycled, reduce car emissions and help raise valuable funds for Hospice.

‘We are so grateful to all our volunteers and supporters, including individuals and businesses, who continue to support us with the collection service and help make it possible. I hope we’ll have even more sign-ups for 2022.’

Christmas tree collections this year will take place on 5 and 6 January for businesses in St Helier, and 8 and 9 January for households and businesses outside of town.

The organisers, who estimate the scheme saves more than 2,000 individual car journeys, are planning to get in touch with those who register closer to the time to confirm collection dates.

Infrastructure Minister Kevin Lewis, said: ‘We are pleased to, again, support Jersey Hospice Care with their Christmas tree collection and recycling initiative, by accepting their deliveries at La Collette early in the new year.

‘We wish them every success. Hopefully the number of trees collected will remain high and it’ll be another successful fundraiser for the Hospice.’

Businesses are asked to sign up to the scheme by 2pm on 4 January and households by 11.30pm on 5 January at trees.jerseyhospicecare.com.
