Three parrots on the loose – after letting themselves out of their cage

The trio – and a fourth which was rescued after being spotted in the sea by fishermen on Tuesday – escaped on Sunday morning.

They have since been spotted at various locations, including the La Blinerie area, La Collette and Bagot Road, often while being attacked by seagulls.

Their 39-year-old owner, who declined to be named, said: ‘They had opened the cage door themselves. They are very smart and must have copied me. I had only had them for about three weeks and I didn’t realise that they could do this, but the Animals Shelter said it has happened quite a few times before.’

One of the birds – believed to be green-cheeked concures – was plucked from the sea by fishermen from The Jersey Catch, who dried it and passed it to JSPCA staff. It has since been returned to the owner.

He said: ‘The worst thing people can do is chase them. After a few days the birds will get tired and they will come down on to the ground. At this point, anyone who sees them should either phone the Animals Shelter or, if it is safe, try to get them themselves.’

Anyone who spots the birds is being asked to phone the JSPCA on 724331.
