The benefit (or downside) of being the most southerly of the Channel Islands…

But at the start of the week, schoolchildren here may have secretly been hoping they lived in Guernsey.

While Jersey youngsters endured the bitter cold with just a fleeting glimpse of the occasional snow flurry, our sister isle saw almost two days of snow showers, giving more than a dusting.

Schools were shut, the airport runway was closed and snowmen popped up across the island.

And Alderney saw even heavier snow, with much of the island grinding to a halt.

As our pictures and weather radar images show, the band of snow showers which pushed down the English Channel stayed about 20 miles north of Jersey.

However, a band of heavy snow is forecast to push across all the Channel Islands early Thursday morning as an area of low pressure named Storm Emma moves in from the Atlantic and collides with the cold air over the British Isles.

Milder weather is expected to push in from the south-west at the end of the week.
