The warning – the highest level of alert – states that 4cm to 8cm of snow is expected across the Island with ‘significant drifting’.

It adds that gale-force winds are ‘likely to lead to blizzard conditions’.

The snow is expected to start falling after midnight on Wednesday and eventually turn to rain on Thursday afternoon.

The warning, which was issued at 11.20 pm, reads: ‘A period of snow is expected on Thursday. It will start after midnight, becoming prolonged and perhaps heavier towards morning, combined with strong to gale-force winds is likely to lead to blizzard conditions at times.

‘An accumulation of around 4cm to 8cm of snow is expected across the Island with significant drifting expected to occur.

‘Air temperatures are expected to gradually rise to above freezing during the afternoon. Ground temperatures are likely to remain below freezing until later in the evening.

‘It is expected that the snow will turn mostly to rain during the afternoon but there is a risk of freezing rain for a time. Further updates will be issued when necessary.’
