Flood precaution warning

Homes were flooded and commuters heading home faced delays when a downpour coincided with the evening rush hour, causing problems in Beaumont, St Lawrence, St Mary and Grands Vaux.

Jersey Met say 24.4 mm of rain fell from 1 pm Monday to 3 am yesterday, with 6.8 mm falling during the downpour between 4 pm and 5 pm Monday.

Firefighters responded to a number of calls to assist householders whose homes had been flooded.

‘It is difficult to predict the weather and what may result from severe rainfall, but if you do live in an area that might be affected by flooding, consider getting any equipment that could help prevent or deal with flooding such as sandbags, small pumps and wooden boards to block entrances, and regularly check the drainage systems that could affect your immediate area,’ a spokesman said.

Infrastructure Department workers were called out to assist firefighters at Beaumont but a spokeswoman said by the time they arrived the water had cleared from the road.

Infrastructure workers also helped firefighters clear a fallen tree from the main road outside Granite Products’ quarry at the northern end of St Peter’s Valley. The department was also called out to remove a tree that was blocking Mont ès Croix in St Brelade.

The average rainfall for November is 106.3 mm and 103.6 mm has been recorded since the start of the month.

A northerly colder showery flow, with a risk of wintry showers overnight, is forecast to dominate the weather up to the weekend.
