Minister rejects call for flat £1 bus fare

During States question time yesterday, the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, asked: ‘Will the minister take steps to make the cost of bus travel in Jersey as attractive as our sister island of Guernsey, where fares are half the price and there is a round-the-island single flat fare of £1. If not, why not?’

Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel said he could not support such a proposal because it would not be beneficial for the taxpayer.

He said: ‘The bus operation in Jersey is very different to Guernsey. Changing the fares to match Guernsey would reduce the amount the Treasury receives by around £1.6 million per annum.
