Thousands packed the Royal Square, where Miss St Helier, Ella Blampied, and Junior Miss St Helier, Natasha O’Sullivan, joined Santa to light up the town centre.
Mr Crowcroft said that the event was a perfect example of Christmas community spirit, and that the organisers are now due to meet to discuss moving the event so that even more people can see it.
He added: ‘The People’s Park would have been full last night and would have given a lot more people the ability to see the switch-on.’
The Economic Development Department provided a grant of £35,000 to pay for the event.
Father Christmas and his ‘express train’ led a parade through the streets before arriving in the Royal Square, where fireworks and a confetti blizzard marked St Helier’s festive illumination.
‘It was an amazing evening,’ Mr Crowcroft said.
‘For me, last night was what St Helier is all about. – it’s not just a place to shop, it’s a place to live.’
