Island air travellers are facing a reduction in the number of flights to and from Gatwick from March next year after Flybe said it could no longer afford to fly in and out of the capital.

But Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean has given fresh hope that the slots would be taken on by another airline.

Talking about the situation during States question time, he said: ‘We are in discussions with a number of airlines that are showing an interest in replacing the Gatwick route. There’s a great deal of interest and I am confident that there will be a replacement in the not-too-distant future.’
