A total of 1,930 full and part-time positions were vacant in the sector during the month – 300 fewer than at the same time last year and the lowest since 1998.

The private sector saw a decrease of 560 workers, while the number of people employed by the States rose by 30.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said that the figures – revealed today in the States Statistics Unit’s annual labour market report – were not surprising given the economic situation, and could have been worse had it not been for a number of States initiatives such as the Back to Work scheme.
