The Health, Social Security and Housing Panel, chaired by Deputy Kristina Moore, are currently reviewing respite services where children and young people with special needs are cared for away from home to give families a break.

Yesterday, the panel started a series of public hearings which will be addressed by a number of those with an interest in respite care, including the head teacher at Mont à l’Abbé School Sharon Eddie, and representatives from Jersey Mencap and Autism Jersey.

Mrs Eddie told the panel that some families were being torn apart by the lack of respite care. That problem was exacerbated by the lack of long-term residential placements for young people needing emergency care.
