Island Games: Basketball

A squad of 12, including six Games newcomers, will go to the Isle of Wight where their opening game on Sunday will be followed by a match against Gibraltar on the Monday.

It is a tough draw by all accounts but the team will be giving it their all to try and secure the best placing possible.

The team

Rob Honey (33): Team Manager. Centre. Employed as a project manager. Has been to three Games after the Isle of Man 2001, Guernsey 2003 and Aland 2009.

Did you know? Rob is president of the Jersey Basketball Association.

Sporting idol: Michael Jordan.

Paul Milbank (28): Guard. Assistant minister. Going to his first ever Games and hopes to come back a better player. Was part of an Adidas All Star under-21 team in the UK.

Did you know? Paul plays the saxophone.

Sporting idol: Jesse Owens.

Duncan Prince (32): Forward. Private banker. Going to his third Games after the Isle of Man 2001 and Guernsey 2003. Hopes to play as hard and fast as he can.

Did you know? Duncan has two Muratti caps.

Sporting idol: Ryan Giggs.

Tareq Haddad (20): Guard. Student at the State University of New York at Binghamton. Former under-17 inter-insular most valuable player. Making his Games debut and hopes to learn from the stronger teams and help Jersey win.

Did you know? Tareq is half Jordanian, half Russian and can speak fluent Arabic.

Sporting idol: Kobe Bryant.

Bob Gouzinis (38): Forward. Software developer. Was on the team in Aland two years’ ago and going to his second Games.

Did you know? Bob watched a match between Michael Jordan’s North Carolina and the Greek National team in 1983.

Sporting idol: Rob Honey.

Krzysztof Radzimski (19): Guard. Royal Bank of Canada employee. Hopes to win games, gain experience and enjoy the week at his first ever Games. Former U17s inter-insular MVP.

Did you know? Krzysztof is a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and FC Barcelona.

Sporting idols: Chris Paul and Magic Johnson.

Jake Michel (17): Guard. Highlands College student. Played in all three inter-insulars this year and was named U17s MVP. Going to his first Games and hoping to gain experience playing at a high level.

Did you know? This is only Jake’s fourth year of playing basketball.

Sporting idol: Derrick Rose.

Guillaume Hoareau (28): Centre. Marketing executive. Making his Games debut and hopes to play hard, enjoy the tournament and spend a week with just basketball on his mind.

Did you know? Guillaume claims to come from the most beautiful island in the world – Réunion.

Sporting idol: Jackson Richardson, French handball ‘legend’ raised in Réunion Island.

Isidro Da Mata (36): Guard. Personal trainer. The Isle of Wight will be Games number four and he hopes to push himself as hard as he can – it’s business time!

Did you know? Isidro is a former MVP in the inter-insular.

Jordan Neill (22): Forward. School assistant. Will be making his Island Games premiere and his aim is to learn as much as he can from playing against top athletes.

Did you know? Jordan plays for the Axle team in the Jersey league.

Greg Ruellan (42): Forward. Landscape gardener. Has been to five Island Games and has played for the Island for over 20 years. Hopes the team plays as hard as they can in the Isle of Wight.

Did you know? Greg’s son now plays in the same league as him in Jersey.

James Reed (21): Guard. Trust employee. Going to his second Island Games after Rhodes 2007 with the hope of winning at least two matches.

Did you know? James has competed for Hampshire in high jump and javelin.

Sporting idols: Michael Jordan and Shane Battier.

Sunday 26 June: Jersey v Rhodes (MLC).

Monday 27 June: Jersey v Gibraltar (MLC).

Wednesday 28 June-Friday 1 July: Play-off for positions.
