However, although the newspapers and mail arrived this morning, many other flights have been cancelled, or are expected to be delayed, as airlines begin to cope with the backlog. Anyone due to fly today has been advised to contact their airline.

UK airports were given permission to open from 10 pm yesterday and Jersey Airport opened this morning at 5.45 am, as the threat from the ash lessened.

No commercial flights have operated between Jersey and the UK or Europe since last Thursday when ash from a volcano eruption in Iceland began to blow into British airspace.

Thousands of travellers have been stranded or have taken to road and sea transport to get home.

Inter-island services are operating as normal.
