Magnificent Maletroit

There was also a surprise silver medal for Matthew Hill in the pommel as he shared second place with Alex Hedges as both scored 10.7 to finish 0.3 points ahead of fourth place.

Competing at the Bollhalla gymnasium Maletroit beat Commonwealth Games gymnast Hedges from the Isle of Man to the gold medal on the parallel bars by 0.1 with a score of 13 and took a silver medal on the high bar with 10.4.

He also won a silver medal on the rings, finishing 0.2 ahead of the bronze medallist and the same behind Hedges who took gold.

With six events in the FIG event – floor, pommel, vault, high bars, rings, and parallel bars – Maletroit (22) reached an overall score of 70 to secure second place behind Alex Hedges who won with 77 while his brother Adam Hedges finished third with 63.4.

‘I’m really happy to have done so well,’ said Maletroit. ‘Apart from the vault everything was very clean and all the routines went well. The competition was quite tough out there but it really all came together for me on the day.’

As well as a good performance on the pommel, Hill was sixth on the parallel bars and in the overall event while Andre Romeril had a great all round performance to take ninth overall.

James Evans just missed out on a medal on the parallel bars, finishing 0.2 out of a bronze medal position and finishing eighth in the overall event.

Coach Ben Frith said: ‘There were some great performances today and some errors we hoped we wouldn’t have happened but we weren’t the only team making mistakes out there so on the whole we’re really pleased.

‘Matthew Maletroit’s got a lot of experience and has done well in previous Games and did very well again today while it was brilliant that Matthew Hill picked up a medal in his strongest event.

‘James Evans competed a double back somersault for the first time, although he didn’t quite land it, and he also just missed out on a bronze medal on the parallel bars and Andre Romeril is competing at his first Island Games against much older and more mature gymnasts – so there are many positives we can take from the day.’

In the ladies’ event, Charlotte Sweeney (13) was the top finisher overall placing 11th with her best performance on the beam in which she scored 9.9 to finish ninth.

Lisa Day was strong on the asymmetric bars to finish ninth with 7.55 and team-mate Elizabeth Appleyard came seventh on the bars with a score of 7.7.

The squad have a training day today ahead of the final event, the set competition in which all gymnasts, including coach Ben Frith, will feature.
