Gymnasts: ‘We knew it would be tough’

Ladies’ team manager Julia Falle said it was always going to be tough in the floor and vault team event in which Jersey finished sixth with an overall score of 93.6, just 0.1 behind fifth-placed Menorca.

Elizabeth Appleyard scored 10.45 on the floor and 12.15 on the vault; Lisa Day scored 11.9 on the floor and 11.95 on the vault; Shinarah Le Blancq scored 11.8 on the floor and 11.6 on vault; Aimee McDonnell scored 11.1 on the floor and 11.8 on the vault, and Charlotte Sweeney scored 11.3 on the floor and 11.45 on the vault.

Falle said: ‘We have a group who are all making their Island Games debuts and are up against girls between the ages of 14 and 18 while they are just 12-15 so I’m really pleased with how they performed.

‘There were very consistent scores from everyone on the team, which has bonded really well, with Elizabeth top scoring in the vault although I think Shinarah had her best performance for a long time. We’re now looking forward to competing in the set event on Friday.’

In the men’s event, coach Ben Frith admitted that it hadn’t been a perfect performance by Jersey who took third place out of four teams.

As such there was no bronze medal on offer but their score of 80.9 placed them behind Faroes with 83.9 and the winners, the Isle of Man on 85.9, but ahead of fourth-placed Aland with 71.35.

James Evans scored 14.7 on the floor and 12.8 on vault; Matthew Hill scored 13.5 on the floor and 11.2 on vault; Matthew Maletroit scored 14.8 on floor and 12.6 on vault, and Andre Romeril scored 14.1 on floor and 11.9 on vault.

Frith said: ‘It could have gone better today as we had a couple of slip ups but it was always going to be difficult with teams like the Faroe Islands and the Isle of Man. At least we’ve taken a chance to get used to the apparatus and have a lot to look forward to for the rest of the week and a few shots at a medal.’
