REGULAR winners Victoria College Prep and JCG were again victorious in the Primary Schools Sports Association Athletics Section’s Autumn one kilometre cross-country relay on Wednesday.

But it was a close run thing for the teams of four over the beautiful course at St Ouen’s Manor, with Victoria only pipping La Moye’s quartet by two seconds in the boys’ race. There was a fast and frantic start to the race, with St Martin taking an early lead, followed closely by De la Salle and St Michael’s. The latter moved from third to first place at the second changeover, but a blistering second leg from Victoria moved them into second spot. The five leading teams continued to battle it out around the course, with Victoria edging to the front for the final changeover, closely followed by St Martin and then La Moye, who made up a huge distance to finish second behind Victoria.

The 25 girls started equally well with JCG’s Alice Bain maintaining a strong lead, with the first runners for Janvrin, St Martin and St Mary not far behind. JCG’s team dominated the race at each stage and Gemma Gothard, their fourth runner, came home to record a quick time of 19.45 minutes – 31 seconds ahead of second placed Grouville.

Conditions were soft underfoot with the recent rain and plenty of leaves to run through, but fast times were recorded in both boys’ and girls’ events.
