HORSHAM won the A-final of the annual Bedell Group Jersey squash festival at the Squash Club on Sunday, beating the Island side, the Jersey Stars, 4-1.
However, according to festival organiser Sally Johnson, the result was not as important as the interest that, yet again, the festival had generated. ‘We had 250-plus competitors which meant that we had to run a round-robin competition of ten groups of players and subsequently we had ten winners’ results from each group they played in.
‘The “final” was between the winners of group 1A, Horsham, and the winners of group 1B, the Jersey Stars.’
As the only winner from a Jersey team of five in the final, British Open over-35 champion and current Island professional and coach, Nick Taylor, was delighted not so much by his own performance but by the number of players who wanted to play here.
‘I’ve never known anything like it,’ he said. ‘This was my first experience of the Jersey festival and I was amazed by how many players the tournament attracted. ‘You’d never get so many players to compete in a similar tournament on the mainland.’ He was the only winner in the Jersey team, beaten 4-1 by Horsham.
