JERSEY may have been beaten overall in the Secondary Schools’ athletics inter-insular last Wednesday in Guernsey but they did taste success winning the boys and girls’ under-14 groups.
Guernsey took the honours in the U15 sections to win overall by 289 points to 247 but despite an uncomfortable boat crossing, with many athletes suffering from sea sickness, the U14 girls dominated their section to win eight of the 11 events held at Foote’s Lane.
Pride of place in the section went to Danielle Leerson (Le Rocquier) (pictured) and Shadine Duquemin (Beaulieu).
Leerson broke the meeting’s 1500-metre record by 1.5 seconds lowering it to 5.05.6; while Duquemin threw the shot putt 10.13 metres, which is one metre more than her previous best setting both a meet and Jersey record.
Hannah Jauncey (Jersey College for Girls) was just two-tenths of a second outside the 70m hurdles record following a PB of 11.6 seconds. Gemma Dufty (JCG) placed third in a PB 12.9.
The most exciting competition was in the U14 boys’ section where Jersey won the final relay to win the section by two points.
