HAMPSHIRE 400 metre hurdles champion Peter Irving captains the Sportingbet Channel Islands team as they made their début in the British Athletics League tomorrow.

Jerseyman Irving, who missed the majority of last season with a foot injury, is looking forward to the Division III match at Kingston.

Irving said: ‘It’s going to be a big test for everyone but I’m sure that those who have competed at National championships and in the English Schools competitions should cope well.

Two of Jersey’s up-and-coming track stars are in the women’s team for their Division IV match in Newport on Sunday.

Gemma Dawkins, who last month won Jersey’s first ever track gold at the Jeux des Iles in Guadeloupe, is hoping for a repeat performance but it will be very difficult as the 16-year-old will be one of the youngest competitors in the 400m.

Sophie Twinam (18) will be looking to continue her recent good form in the 400m hurdles.
