The 18-year-old man- mountain stretched his own age group record to 18.59m – an effort that leaves him just 44 cm short of qualifying for the Junior World Championships.
The Loughborough student’s putt won him the Scottish U20 title by well over two-and-a-half metres, with Daniel Carlin second on 15.92m.
Stevenson was delighted with his progess – his previous best had been 17.92 – particularly as his preparation had been far from ideal.
He only arrived in Scotland in the early hours, following travel problems after his appearance in the senior Norwich Union World Trials in Sheffield on Saturday.
Stevenson only had time for three throws with the heavier weight on Saturday, finishing ninth out of the 14 entrants with 15.47m – but he did have the satisfaction of beating Scotland’s No 1 Scott Thompson.
