The best known locally, of course, is defending champion Elizabeth Cann, who beat all four seeds to win the title last year.

She is the No 2 seed in the ladies’ singles behind Commonwealth champion Tracey Hallam.

The top two are both looking for their third title and have a bye in the first round with Cann’s second round match, against either Kelly Mead or Sarah Walker, scheduled for 6.40 pm tomorrow.

Kim Ashton is Jersey’s other representative and she takes on Fontaine Chapman at 3.50 pm and could face Cann in the semi-final if the two progress that far.

Mariana Agathangelou features in two doubles events.

With ladies’ partner Gabby White she is seeded fourth and faces Jo Dix and Kelly Holdway at 8.35 pm in the first round.

The promising pair should take some confidence into the competition having beaten the second seeds, Natalie Munt and Joanne Nicholas, in November to win the ASICS National Elite Open.

Withdraw

The top seeds, and European champions, have been split after Gail Emms was forced to withdraw from the competition through illness leaving Donna Kellogg in search of a new partner at this late stage.

Agathangelou actually starts her championship trail off in the mixed doubles with Dean George.

Unseeded, the pair take on Marcus Ellis and Sarah Walker at 10.15 am and if successful next face the fourth seeds, Robin Middleton and Liza Smith, in the second round at 2.10 pm.

The top seeds, and Olympic silver medallists, Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson, have also withdrawn leaving the top half of the draw with only one seeded pair.

Former international star Mark Constable is also seeded, for the men’s singles, at No 7 and he takes the experience of winning the title in 2002 into his first round match, at 12.10 pm, against Daryl Jacobs.

The Championship, at the Manchester Velodrome, concludes on Sunday.

Cann has also been named in the England squad for the Uber Cup World Team Championship qualifiers in Almere from 12-17 February.
