Competing in his home circle in the Loughborough Graded Indoor Open the former Highlands and Haute Vall?e student recorded a massive 17.92 metre putt, which broke the previous meeting record of 17.76, held by Jay Thomas, who is now in the U23 category.
The 18-year-old, a medal winner at Island Games, Jeux des Iles and national age group levels, also stretched his own Scottish indoor record – and will look to do so again over the next few weekends.
In Belfast for the Irish indoor championships this coming weekend, he then heads for Cardiff to throw for Scotland in the senior men’s international event, where he will again be under the scrutiny of the Great Britain selectors regarding selection for the Junior World Championships later this year.
He needs an outdoor distance of 19 metres to make it, but coach Geoff Capes is condifident that Stevenson can make it – in half-metre increments – such is his improvement in training.
Stevenson, now 128 kilos, recently underwent a day-long GB training trial which comprised of four tournament tests – a gruelling programme in which he had to maintan a high standard of over 17 metres for an incredible 96 throws!
The Scotland age group field athlete of the year last season, he will have a further chance to build on his growing reputation when he competes in the Scotland U20 championships in the Kelvin Hall on 10 February.
