Boxing as the Western Counties champion in the Class B 60 to 64 kilo category, Munroe eventually lost 14-12 to London champion Paul Akubuko, a Liverpool lad boxing for West Ham ABC.

Aggressive southpaw Akubuko started well and Boyd was playing a catch up game from midway into the second round of the four round contest at the Brewster Hall in Romford, on Saturday.

Taking advice from coach Tony Burt the Jersey boxer started to turn the bout in his favour, putting his punches together well, throwing straight right hands and using the left hook.

So, a disappointment, but Munroe can take several valuable lessons from the experience, not least how important the early rounds are with computer scoring.

There was also disappointment for the two other Jersey boxers trying to progress, with Pisces ABC’s Sam Bowen being hit by flu and having to withdraw from his contest and Leonis’s Scott Harben, also unable to compete for the Southern Counties in their quarter-final bout against the Army, because of damage to his left hand.

The Island’s boxers take a break from competition, with Leonis back in action on 9 Feburary on a Jersey Dinner Boxing Club bill at the Hotel L’Horizon, when they will face a South of England Select.
