The minister’s public criticism of ‘bitterly failing’ child protection standards set in chain the process leading to the review announced yesterday, and to Chief Minister Frank Walker’s decision to try to sack him. But in an e-mail to a fellow States Member this week, Senator Syvret said that the civil servants responsible for the failures would ‘close ranks’, ‘tell lies’, and do everything they could to block the review. Yesterday it was announced that former Devon County Social Services director Andrew Williamson has been appointed to carry out the three-month initial review, with wide-ranging terms of reference. His work could be subsumed by a committee of inquiry, if the States agree.
