At a heated public meeting last night parishioners voted 172 to 85 against a proposition to build 56 houses in fields off Rue de Jambart – despite impassioned speeches by both parish Deputies in favour of the scheme. In the end it was Senator Len Norman – a St Clement resident and former Deputy – who managed to persuade the assembly that building on the fields would set a precedent for years to come. But speaking after the meeting Housing Minister Terry Le Main said that his department would continue to pursue the site. He also criticised Constable Derek Gray for announcing that a three-day poll would be carried out and then announcing yesterday that the vote would be after the meeting. ‘The Housing Department is so desperate for accommodation that it will pursue the Jambart site anyway,’ he said.
