No 2 seed Cann, who enjoyed a bye in the first round, dismissed Francesca Edelmann 11-1, 11-2 to earn a last-eight tie against unseeded Helen Davie this afternoon.

There remains the intriguing possibility of a Jersey v Guernsey semi-final as Sarnian star Elena Johnson is in the other quarter-final in Cann’s half of the draw.

Johnson, however, has yet to lift a hand in anger, receiving a bye in round one, then a walk-over courtesy of Nicola Cerfontyne.

Johnson faces No 3 seed Jill Pittard, for a semi-final spot.

Cann, one of three Jersey Commonwealth Games players taking part in the nationals, can not now, however, face team-mate and friend Solenn Pasturel.

Pasturel was denied the opportunity to take on No 1 seed Tracey Hallam – the opponent Cann beat in last year’s final – in the quarter-finals when she went down to Rachel Howard 11-4, 11-9 in the second round.

Jersey’s team coach Mark Constable put aside the disappointment of his first round elimination in the mixed doubles, with partner Lucy Burns, to make progress in the men’s singles.

Constable, the No 8 seed, secured victories over Paul Butler (15-3, 15-2) and Harry Wright (15/4, 15/13), but now faces No 1 seed Nick Kidd in the quarter-finals this afternoon.

It will be a tough ask for Constable, the former England No 1 before a knee injury restricted his career, as Kidd’s strength’s are his speed and movement.

Jersey’s rising doubles star Mariana Agathangelou opened her account with a victory alongside Edward Foster in the mixed, the pair disposing of Chris Evans and Kathryn Gittins 15-12, 15-4.

Their progress, however, was soon halted by the No 3 seeds Robert Blair and Natalie Munt in the next round, 15-12, 15-2.

However, teaming up with Pasturel’s singles conqueror Rachel Howard, in the ladies’ doubles Agathangelou then beat Emma Henry and Caroline Smith 15-9, 15-7.

They face No 4 seeds Sarah Bok and Jenny Wallwork in this afternoon’s quarter-finals.

Burns and Pasturel, facing unseeded Jenny Day and Liza Parker, went down 15-2, 15-3.
