After taking a four-and-a-half to half-point lead in Wednesday’s four-ball, better-ball matches they won eight of the ten singles played yesterday to record a 13-and-a-half to one-and-a-half triumph over a demoralised Guernsey.

The Sarnians failed to record one win with all their points coming from the three matches shared.

But the score hides the fact that several of the matches were close with eight going to the 18th green.

Terry Smith recorded the most comfortable victory – an 8 and 6 triumph over Ken Giles – after claiming birdies on the first four holes to go four up while Charlie Smith beat Pat McKeary 5 and 3.

It meant that Jersey retained the title they won 14-and-a-half to a half in Guensey last year and gives them an 8-2 lead in the series.

Said the Island side’s non-playing captain Wally Clarke: ‘It was a very good win indeed.

But what is significant is the number of matches that were decided on the last hole and, despite the score, it could have gone either way – and we’re very grateful that it went our way in the end! ‘It’s been a very good two days and all the team played well – they’re a cracking good team.’ Singles scores: Vic Bourgoise bt Roy Corbet 1 up; Geoff Ramskill bt Mickie King 1 up; Terry Smith bt Ken Giles 8 & 6; Kevin O’Toole bt Richard vaudin 3 & 2; Charlie Smith bt Pat McKearey 5 & 3; Bart McCarthy bt John Cavet 4 & 2; John O’Neill shared with Keith Jeffreys; Ted Le Gresley shared with Hedley Ablitt; Barry Thorp bt Nial Counihan 4 & 3; Gerald Binding bt Geoff Davies 5 & 4.
