In the opening event Le Couilliard touched in 1 min 58.44 sec and Militis in 1.57.02.

Both swimmers were encouraged by their 200m swims – the event isn’t their best but Jersey’s men are hoping to qualify for the 4 x 200 freestyle relay at the Commonwealths in Melbourne next year.

Said Tigers coach Paul du Feu: ‘It’s a positive start to the meet and I feel there’s still room for improvement in the 200m free.

It’s an event which neither of them have taken seriously before.’ They followed these performances with 50m butterfly swims which were very close to their personal best times as Le Couilliard clocked 25.97 sec and Militis 25.89.

Militis’s time – a fraction outside his best – got him into the semi-finals but his 26 sec performance this time meant he missed out on the final.

Damien Bouchere opened his meet with a reasonable 200m breast-stroke and he was due to be joined in the 400 IM heats today by Daniel Halksworth.
