The 28-year-old Jerseyborn plasterer won his foursomes 4 and 3, partnering Stuart Archibald, before then taking half a point from his singles against Ben Evans, helping Hampshire defeat Sussex 7 1/2-4 1/2.
O’Neill said: ‘It was a good weekend and I was happy with my form.
Evans is a quality golfer and in the end I should have beaten him.
‘I missed a 20-foot putt for a birdie on the last for the win and he sank his birdie attempt to halve the match.
Evans is virtually a full-time golfer, he plays off plus-5 and has been hand-picked for coaching by Nick Faldo.
‘I scored a birdie at the third only to lose the hole to an eagle and I was three-down after he birdied six and seven.
‘I then got back to all-square after winning nine, 11 and 12 and one-up with one to play I was guaranteed at least a half a point.
‘I was agonisingly close to winning too, my putt was spot on but the ball stopped just an inch from the hole.’ O’Neill is back in Hampshire this weekend representing the county in the southern region shoot-out against a dozen other regions.
He plays in a team of six with all six players’ strokeplay scores to count with the winning county progressing to the national final later in the year.
