JRA president Cliff Mallett said: ‘The competition is held over three stages.

Jersey and Guernsey hold the first stage in their own island this weekend, and the best eight scorers from Jersey will go to Guernsey on 26 June to shoot against their top eight, for the second stage.

Then the final is held in Jersey, at Les Landes, on 27 June, and is shot, shoulder to shoulder, over 900 and 1,000 yards.’ The scores from Stage 2 and the final are then added together to determine the champion.

The competition began in 1980 and a Jersey shooter has held the title for all but seven years, with Jersey’s most recent winners being Colin Mallett and David Le Quesne.

But Cliff Mallett jnr is making no predictions about who will be the 2004 champion.

‘I hope Jersey will win the title back, but it’s impossible to predict.

It can depend on so many things, including wind direction and strength – and whether they hit the right target! You don’t know who has won until the last shot has been fired.’
