Gyles Robin (15), Chris Young (13) and Kieran Goodricke (15) have been chosen to travel to the UK once a month for coaching along with Hampshire girls handicap champion Olivia Higgins, who is already an established member of the county girls’ team and will be there again this summer.
Royal Jersey player Robin and La Moye junior Young are part of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Golf School of Excellence while Goodricke is also a member of La Moye who was recommended by the Standard Bank Junior Golf Committee.
Last year Robin cut his handicap to five as he won three Island tournaments and a place in the final of the Island Matchplay.
He also played in the Island’s junior team that beat Guernsey and was awarded the Junior Island Order of Merit.
Young also reduced his handicap – from 14 to eight – and won the Mike Deeley Cup at La Moye and the Les Mielles Junior Open, when his score of 70 set a new junior course record.
Goodricke’s handicap has also come down, from 15 to eight.
Last year he won the Northants GC junior open Stableford and in the process cut his handicap to 13.
Then, the next day, he went out and won the Stableford at the Royal Winchester.
Higgins’ 2004 victories included the Royal Jersey Ladies Strokeplay, Les Ormes Open and three ladies’ competitions at the Royal Jersey.
She also equalled the ladies’ course record at the Royal and was named the June 2004 JEP/Itex golfer of the month.
In the meantime her handicap fell from 12 to six.
Said School of Excellence coach and Royal Jersey pro Oliver Darby: ‘All the players have worked very hard this year and their results are very encouraging.
The School of Excellence is developing strongly, and we’ve just appointed individual mentors to each squad member.
‘The mentors are senior Island and former county players, who will give the youngsters valuable insights into preparing for competitions as well as helping them to achieve their goals.’
